The Healing Power of Words

I recently gave a talk on the power of words in healing, a topic that has deeply influenced my approach to patient care. My journey into this began during my Integrative Medicine fellowship, where I was first introduced to clinical hypnosis as a mind-body treatment modality. I was fascinated by how something as simple as a shift in language could reduce pain, ease anxiety, and even influence physiological responses. Wanting to understand more, I pursued certification in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH).

Words as Medicine

Later, I came across the work of Dr. Steve Bierman, an emergency medicine physician who speaks about Noetic Medicine—the idea that what a patient hears and believes can shape their physiological response to treatment.

I was also fascinated reading Dr. Alia Crum’s research, where she has demonstrated that our beliefs about stress, food, and treatment influence physiological responses. For example, one of her studies showed that viewing stress as enhancing rather than harmful was associated with better health, emotional well-being, and productivity. These findings suggest that how we frame an experience changes how the body responds to it—a concept with profound implications for healing.

The way we talk about illness, treatment, and recovery has the power to empower or diminish, ease suffering or amplify it.

For example, when discussing chemotherapy, we often hear it described as “an aggressive treatment”. While medically accurate, this wording can unintentionally reinforce the idea that the body is under attack, creating a sense of fear and resistance in patients. If instead, we say, “This treatment is working with your body to restore balance,” we shift the perspective from one of battle to one of collaboration and healing.

Even the way we describe stress is important. We often hear that stress is harmful, but stress is also the body’s way of preparing for challenge. If we help patients see stress as a sign of resilience rather than depletion, we can shift their experience from helplessness to empowerment.

Mindset and Health

Mindsets are a portal between conscious and subconscious processes,” says Dr. Alia Crum. She has shown that negative beliefs can cause negative consequences the same way positive beliefs can produce positive results—they operate as a default setting of the mind. If a patient fears a treatment, dreads side effects, or doubts their body’s ability to heal, their body may react with heightened stress and resistance. Conversely, when a patient trusts their treatment and believes in their resilience, their body mobilizes resources to support healing.

This understanding has changed the way I speak with my patients. I no longer just deliver information—I aim to shape the way they experience their care. I try to help them see their treatment as something that is working with them, not against them.

Every Conversation is an Opportunity

I now see every interaction as a chance to build trust, ease fear, and shift the way someone experiences their healing journey. I’ve learned that medicine is not just about what we prescribe—it’s about how we show up, how we listen, and the words we choose.

If there is one thing I hope to share, it is this: Healing is not just about medicine. It is about the way we experience our care, the stories we tell ourselves, and the words we hear along the way.

May we all use our words to heal.
