Progress Over Perfection: A New Year's Resolution

Happy New Year! As we step into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the power of progress over perfection—a lesson I revisited in a profound way this past year.
Last year around this time, I shared my thoughts on letting go of the quest for perfection in favor of consistent, meaningful effort. I recounted how, in 2023, I embraced a daily commitment to simply step onto my elliptical. No rigid schedule, no ideal conditions—just the intention to show up. That simple shift led me to complete 173 workouts that year, a remarkable improvement over years past.

Setting Realistic Goals … a bit of Stretch too

For 2024, I set a goal of 200 workouts. By the end of the first quarter, I was feeling so strong and steady that I ambitiously revised my goal to 250. I was on track—until I wasn’t. A stretch of low energy forced me to pause and reevaluate. At first, I felt the familiar pangs of frustration and disappointment. Would I fall short of my goal?

At the same time, I had an upcoming trip to Patagonia—a place that had long been on my bucket list. The itinerary included ambitious hikes, including two 10-mile treks on consecutive days, one with a particularly steep and tricky downhill section. As my energy wavered, doubts crept in. Would I even be able to complete these hikes?

But then I reminded myself: this wasn’t about perfection. It was about progress and trusting the foundation I had built. Over the years, I had focused on cultivating muscle strength, flexibility, and stability. My body had carried me through challenges before; I believed it could do so again.

And it did. Not only did I complete the hikes, but I did so with a confidence and calm that were new to me. The trails were challenging, yet I found myself embracing them with a steadiness that I hadn’t felt in the past—not even when faced with far less difficult paths.

Moving forward in 2025

While I didn’t hit my revised goal of 250 workouts, I achieved something even greater: I gained the ability to face the unknown with trust in my body and mind. I transformed fear into confidence. And I learned, yet again, that progress often shows up in unexpected ways.

As we begin this new year, I encourage you to embrace progress over perfection in your own life. Set goals, yes, but be open to the journey they lead you on. Celebrate the small victories, the unexpected detours, and the quiet transformations.

Here’s to a 2025 filled with consistent growth, self-compassion, and the courage to show up for ourselves—no matter how imperfectly.

I’d love to hear about your goals and reflections for this year. How will you prioritize progress in 2025? Let’s inspire each other to keep moving forward.
